It in the past it was connected to the Festa delle tre Marie, or the Festival of the Marys, that takes place on the first Sunday in September every year. Heralded by a historic water-borne pageant of gondoliers, costumed actors and brightly coloured boats in the sixteenth-century style, it recalls the warm welcome made to Caterina Cornaro, the last Queen of Cyprus who gave it up in favour of Venice, in 1489.

The Festa del Redentore is keenly supported by the lagoon’s locals as it is founded on the area’s history, religion and spectacular events. The celebrations begin with the creation of a long votive boat-bridge on the Giudecca Canal and continue over the next few days with numerous fireworks displays, lighting up the lagoon and creating colourful rainbows between the waves and painting the ancient palazzi in a vibrant, sparkling splendour. The festival celebrates the end of the plague epidemic that struck Venice between 1575 and 1577.

The race goes along several Venetian streets and crosses many bridges, including the Grand Canal until it reaches the finish line at the Riva dei sette Martiri.
